6 AM ET: Trump documents recording, strikes kill child, Hollywood rape accusations & more
Jun 1, 2023
Lawmakers have voted to pass the debt limit deal through the House, now it's the Senate's turn. Federal prosecutors have a recording of former President Donald Trump talking about holding onto classified documents. Russian missile strikes have killed three people, including a child in Ukraine's capital. As one Hollywood actor is found guilty of rape, another avoids charges for sexual assault. Plus, Amazon has reached a $30 million settlement over privacy.
Hello! From CNN, I'm Jo Beck with the 5 things you need to know for Thursday, June 1st.
The House has passed the debt deal, but the country is not out of the woods just yet. The overwhelming majority of lawmakers approved the bill to suspend the debt ceiling, but it took a bipartisan efforts to get the measure through. As CNN's Phil Mattingly tells us, White House officials are seeing the positives in that.

They feel like this deal is reflective, one of a negotiation that on net they feel like ended up in a positive way, given the fact it's in divided government and to actually establishes a working relationship with Republicans, not one that's going to lead to major legislative changes or legislative agreements, but that should, at least according to one official, keep the trains running on time for the near term.
There are still 71 Republicans and 46 Democrats who voted against it, though, and that raises concern there could be more holdouts from both parties in the Senate. With fears of a global economic catastrophe, looming.
Federal prosecutors investigating Donald Trump's handling of classified documents have gotten hold of an audio recording, where the former president talks about holding on to top secret files. That's according to multiple sources, who tell CNN the audio is from a 2021 meeting and say Trump was talking about a Pentagon file on a potential attack on Iran. The meeting was held at Trump's golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey, more than six months after he left the White House. And the sources say at least some of the attendees did not have security clearance to access classified information. CNN has not listened to the recording, but the sources described it to CNN's Paula Reid.

Now, perhaps more importantly for investigators on this recording, you can hear Trump suggest that he would like to share this information with the people he's speaking with. But he acknowledges that there are limits to his power to declassify, post-Presidency.
Donald Trump has repeatedly claimed he could retain presidential records and, quote, automatically declassify documents. A spokesman for his campaign said leaks are meant to, quote, "inflame tensions" around the former president, who's making a 2024 run for the White House.
Officials say at least three people have been killed in strikes on Ukraine's capital, including a nine year old girl. The country's military says it destroyed all ten Russian missiles that were launched at Kyiv. But the debris damaged a children's clinic, two schools and a police station while a residential building was also damaged. Meanwhile, an official from a Russian region bordering Ukraine says at least five people have been injured by Ukrainian shelling.
As one Hollywood actor is found guilty of rape, another avoid sexual assault charges. CNN's Faiz Jamil has more on Danny Masterson's guilty verdict.

Jo, an L.A. jury has found the actor from "That 70s show" guilty, on two of three counts of rape in a retrial. The jury, though, could not reach a decision on the third count. The 47 year old actor had pleaded not guilty to raping three women at his home in separate incidents between 2001 and 23. And the district attorney thanked the women for coming forward, saying, quote, "Their courage and strength have been an inspiration to us all."
Meanwhile, the DA's office says Armie Hammer will not face sexual assault charges after an investigation by the LAPD found insufficient evidence. A woman has accused the actor of raping her in 2017, which he denies. Calling the allegations outrageous and saying the relationship was completely consensual. An official says sexual assault cases are, quote, "often difficult to prove," but said there wasn't enough evidence to charge Hammer with a crime, partly because of what they called the complexity of the relationship.
Amazon has settled two lawsuits dealing with privacy. That's next.
Amazon has agreed to pay $30 million to settle two privacy related lawsuits with the FTC. The two settlements highlighted claims that Amazon kept Ring videos, Alexa voice recordings and related geo-location information for years, in some cases without consent. And even if consumers asked for the data to be deleted. In a statement, Amazon denies the FTC's claims that it broke the law and says the settlements, quote, "put these matters behind us."
That's all for now. I'll be back with our next episode, which drops at 9 a.m. Eastern.
