UK weather: Met Office forecasts 'humid and unstable' conditions

A meteorologist has warned that the UK and other countries are at risk of heat records being smashed in the coming days.

This is, in part, because the sea temperatures are rising thanks to the introduction of El Nino, sparking fears of more intense summer heat going forward. That and the ongoing effects of climate change are being felt.

Spain in particular is under close watch as blistering 47C highs are expected to ravage the destination popular with holidaying Brits in the coming days.

Speaking to Express.co.uk, Jim Dale, senior meteorologist at British Weather Services, said: "At the moment the focus is on Spain for this weekend onwards and possible record temperatures, 47.6C being the current record.

"The bottom line - we are in very uncertain times with climate change and we are possibly at a tipping point."

But what does this mean for Britain? Mr Dale, who previously tipped the UK to see highs of 34C from this weekend, said models are still showing highs of 31C to hit the country from as early as Friday.

Looking ahead to next week and beyond, he added: "The weather will ebb and flow, with Atlantic rain and showers every so often. I am watching for intense downpour events, given the extreme sea temperatures."

Weather maps show the south east, including London boroughs, parts of Hertfordshire, Kent, Sussex and Essex, are set to scoop top temperatures of 30C or under by Sunday.

But the picture will be far worse overseas, with the Middle East suffering horrendously hot conditions. Mr Dale, a weather author, added: "Middle East countries such as Iran and Iraq are also set to break 50C easily - with records under threat. In America, Texas/Nevada/Arizona and the like are also in the furnace."

    Met Office verdict

The Met Office also upheld claims of a scorching weekend and beyond. In an exclusive statement to Express.co.uk, Stephen Dixon, a spokesman for the forecaster, said: "A northwest/southeast split is likely to develop for the UK weather in the latter half of this week.

"Incursions of frontal rain for those in the northwest, and a dry, fine and sunny picture for those in the southeast. For the southeast in particular, this will mean a resumption of temperatures into the high 20C for some, possibly even reaching 30C through the weekend.

"It’ll be remaining warm elsewhere and, while subdued more in the northwest with more in the way of cloud and rain on Friday and Saturday, temperatures will still remain above average for the time of year in what has been a warm start to summer for many.

"That type of weather regime is likely to persist in the early part of next week, with temperatures in the southeast likely to remain well above average, with the southeast most likely to see any temperatures in excess of 30C."
