The evolving international context has increased attention on the positioning and repositioning of sub-Saharan countries with respect to major global issues. Recent voting behaviour in UN bodies, the diplomatic action of African leaders, and the trajectories of their relations with external partners have come under greater scrutiny in the past year.
At the same time, a distancing from the West – or at least a more critical approach towards traditional European and American partners – seems to appear both in the rhetoric and positions of African leaders and the sentiments of public opinion. Widespread debates in the digital and social media, and a number of popular protests have all hinted at a growing gap.

On the occasion, we will also present the annual ISPI Report on sub-Saharan Africa, produced with the support of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.

The conference will be held in presence in Milan at Palazzo Clerici (via Clerici 5) on Monday 27 November from 17:00 to 18:40.

Ispi has always been careful to ensure an inclusive working environment and to be attentive to gender diversity and to the plurality of voices represented in its initiatives. When this is not reflected in one of our publications or events, it is due to the unavailability of the consulted experts to participate or to challenges in identifying specific profiles in our network.
