Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian has signaled Iran’s willingness to restore diplomatic relations with Morocco, as part of the country’s ongoing efforts for regional normalization.
In a meeting with ambassadors from Muslim nations, Amirabdollahian expressed Iran’s readiness to extend the process of normalizing ties beyond Saudi Arabia, highlighting Morocco and Egypt as a potential partner for enhanced diplomatic relations, according to an Irani news agency.
“We are delighted to have been able to normalize the relations between Saudi Arabia and the Islamic Republic of Iran in the recent months through the course of diplomacy and negotiations,” the foreign minister said.
Over the years, tensions between Iran and Morocco have become normalized, leading to a widespread view of Iran as a threat to the state.
Despite Iran’s desire to repair relations, Morocco remains committed to its decision to sever diplomatic ties since 2018. The situation on the ground offers little incentive for Morocco to reconsider its position, as Iran continues its interventionist foreign policy and interference in regional countries.
Algeria and Iran are joining hands to pressure Morocco and Israel and limit their movements in the region, while Mauritania aligns with Iran to enhance its security capabilities within the Sahel and Sahara region
Additionally, Iran’s involvement in supporting the separatist Polisario Front, including military training supervised by Iranian diplomats, has further strained relations.
