Morocco finds itself at the forefront of countries facing health risks stemming from climate change, ranking third globally, only surpassed by Equatorial Guinea and Iran, according to a recent report.
The ranking, compiled by MedicalAid, evaluated the environmental conditions conducive to a healthy living environment and assigned Morocco a score of 2.3 out of ten, placing it among the countries with the least favorable conditions. Factors contributing to this ranking include a rise in temperatures by 2.30 percent over the past few decades and continued exposure to toxic emissions.
Despite commendable efforts in sewage system infrastructure, with a score of nearly 50 out of a hundred, Morocco’s provision of potable water received a modest score of 36.7 out of 100.
However, the ranking highlighted that Morocco’s air quality is severely affected by fine particles known as PM2.5, making it one of the most polluted countries globally. Morocco ranked seventh lowest in combating these particles, with a rate of 3.5 percent. This is despite the country’s efforts to mitigate exposure to air pollution, particularly lead.
Morocco shares a position with Iran in terms of deteriorating air quality, with both countries experiencing significant pollution due to gaseous emissions and high exposure to fine particles. Equatorial Guinea, Turkmenistan, China, and Algeria also feature prominently on the list of countries grappling with air quality deterioration.
On the other end of the spectrum, Iceland stands out as one of the safest countries in the face of climate change, boasting exceptional air quality with a perfect score of 100 out of 100. Sweden and Finland also rank highly, thanks to the resilience of their sanitation systems and adherence to clean energy standards.
The report emphasizes that major economies face persistent pollution threats despite technological advancements. China, for instance, ranked at the bottom of the list, while the United States of America secured the 46th position, lagging behind countries like Panama and Ecuador.
