Iranian journalists Elaheh Mohammadi and Niloofar Hamedi have been sentenced to six and seven years in jail respectively – both have been held in Tehran’s Evin prison for over a year after they were arrested following their coverage of the death of Mahsa Amini, the 22 year-old Kurdish-Iranian who died in police custody last September. The journalists faced charges including cooperation with the US government. Since the protests following the death of Amini, 79 journalists have been arrested in Iran, according to Reporters Without Borders – including a reporter at the Shargh newspaper who reported on the case of Armita Geravand, the 16 year-old who was allegedly attacked by Iran’s morality police for not wearing the mandatory headscarf earlier this month, and who was reported “brain dead” on Sunday.
